Knowing how to think

By the time your child is a teenager, they’ve been in school for eight years.
They’ve learned that getting the correct answer gets them a better score.
And a better score is the point of school.

Or is it?

I was an expert at getting good grades. I could do homework, memorize, study, and ace quizzes and tests with EASE. It was simple. Take what the teacher taught you, memorize it, and spit it back out on assessments. This always resulted in good grades. Good grades = success, but does good grades = thinking?

What I’ve come to realize is that even though I was an expert at regurgitating information to get a good grade, I wasn’t an expert at thinking. At thinking for myself. At experimenting with the knowledge given to me and making it my own. At formulating my theories. At challenging what I was taught. At deeply analyzing information. School did not teach me this.

School didn’t teach me to think. I relied solely on teachers and professors to tell me the TRUTH of my education. I accepted it, took it in, and believed it. I didn’t question it or wonder about it. I just memorized it and repeated it. It got me to valedictorian, to accolades, and to awards. But it didn’t help me think introspectively. To question if what I was learning was truth. To examine the information I was taking in and decide if I’d make it mine. The ability to TRULY THINK was missing.

No one had taught me how to think in 16 years of schooling. No one.

Until my mentor and coach, Brooke Castillo, did. She taught me to find my truth. To question everything. To be curious, and analyze, and wonder. She taught me to ask “Why?” and the indescribable power in asking it.

Now I’m an expert thinker. I use the power of my brain for more than just memorizing answers. I use it to create my life, my reality, my world. I have discovered so much truth that I never knew existed.

Knowing HOW to THINK is a priceless treasure. Schools don’t teach it.
But I do.
