Summer is here.
I’m counting down the days till I hear the dreaded words.
“I’m bored.”
I used to believe that boredom was a thing. A fact.
But it’s not.
Boredom is a feeling.
Feelings come from our thoughts.
That means a thought like, “There’s nothing to do,” is what creates boredom.
Boredom is completely optional.
I also used to believe that boredom was something to eliminate.
That I should be concerned if my kids were bored.
Then I realized something powerful.
Children learn who they are and what they really enjoy if they are allowed to sit with themselves.
Being alone with their thinking further allows them to recognize their authentic voice.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being bored.
So, in actuality, being bored can be helpful for our children (and our teens).
Allow your children and teens to embrace boredom this summer. They might just discover that contentment arises from what’s within them.
